Toxins in Rock and Dungeness Crabs Found, Season Delayed

Been waiting for the start of crab season and dreaming of holiday crab?  You’ll have to wait a bit…this year’s crabbing season has been delayed due to toxins built up in crabs from the unprecedented red algae bloom in the Pacific.  This affects rock and Dungeness species.  The toxins are not destroyed by boiling water (independently verified with a biochemist) and the toxins have been known to cause permanent damage and even death in humans.

Crab Season and the Algae Bloom: Be Aware!

There’s an enormous toxic algae bloom in the Pacific that has the potential to delay Dungeness season.  Officials are conducting tests on crabs now and expect to announce later this week if crabs are safe to catch or if crab season must be delayed.  Keep in mind that this algae creates a neurotoxin in crabs that can kill humans, so please keep an eye on the testing results.

More info on this news, and we’ll update when the results are posted.
