kenjones Ken Jones, President. Liaison—various government groups and organizations (CA DF&G, NOAA, IGFA), and acting Northern California Regional Coordinator. Educator, writer, and former business owner. Author of Pier Fishing in California and owner/operator of the Pier Fishing In California website (www.pierfishing.com). A fisherman in California for more than fifty years including all types of saltwater fishing – surf, rock, pier, private boat and party boat. Has been involved with a number of fishery issues and served on a number of committees including the CA Bay-Delta Sport Fishing Enhancement Stamp (BDSFES) Advisory Committee, California Recreational Fish Implementation Team (NOAA), Recreational Fishing Alliance Advisory Board, and the North Central Coast Stakeholders Group (MLPA). United Pier and Shore Anglers of California (UPSAC): Founder, President and Board Member 2003-Present. Has served on the Board of Directors for the Outdoor Writers Association of California (OWAC) since 2005 and is the current President. He has written for many magazines including Western Saltwater Fisherman, California Angler, and Western Outdoor News. He writes regular columns and articles for the Fish Rap Newspaper and Fish Taco Chronicles. Graduated with a B.S. in Organizational Development from USF, M.S. in Education from Dominican College.
jamesliu James Liu, Ph.D., Treasurer. Liaison—Boy Scouts of America, San Jose Schools. Earns a living as a UNIX kernel driver and performance engineer at a major computer company. Has close to 20 years experience in large enterprise and scientific computing; Close to 30 years of fishing experience in both salt and fresh water in California and British Columbia. A specialist at surf casting tactics and a master rod builder. United Pier and Shore Anglers of California (UPSAC): a Charter Board Member since 2003, Secretary 2003-2009, and Treasurer 2006-Present. Co-host of UPSAC’s Annual Mud Marlin Derby held at Berkeley Pier. Served as shore fishing representative on both the California Central Coast and North Central Coast MLPA Statewide Interest Groups. Is currently Cub master for his scout pack, and is a trained BSA Merit Badge counselor for Fishing, Computers, Nuclear Science, and Cooking; also a volunteer teacher for after-school enrichment classes in computer hardware and California Sportfishing for K-5. James received his B.S. and Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from UC Berkeley.
robertgardner Robert Gardner, Vice President and East SF Bay Coordinator (Fremont-Vallejo). Works in multi-media productions by day; Born in Berkeley, CA in the year the Civil Rights Act was passed (Title VI). A fisherman in California for more than forty years including all types of saltwater fishing – surf, rock, pier, private boat and party boat. United Pier and Shore Anglers of California (UPSAC): Board Member 2006-Present, current Vice President. Co-host of UPSAC’s Annual Mud Marlin Derby held at Berkeley Pier. Respected local Bay Area expert on location and tactics for sturgeon, halibut, striped bass, and sharks. Graduated with a bachelor’s in Communications from San Francisco State University
boydgrant Boyd Grant, Member – Board of Directors and Manager Goleta Pier Angler Center. Retired social worker and telecommunications customer service representative with more than 50 years of fresh and saltwater fishing experience. Has caught many different species but prefers the inshore environment. Currently serves as the Pier Host at Goleta Pier for Santa Barbara Parks Department. United Pier and Shore Anglers of California (UPSAC): Board Member 2003-2005, 2008-2010; Vice President 2003-2005. Chaired the initiative for the Goleta Pier Educational Program: Manager of the UPSAC Goleta Pier Angler Center that provides angler education and organized fishing opportunities for area youth. The Center is also a point of contact for local seabird and marine mammal rescue efforts as well as functioning as a visitor center for the more than 1.5 million annual park visitors. Boyd has also been able to organize and work with a band of pier regulars who help oversee the pier.

Primary job as a Contractor; a fisherman in California for more than forty years including all types of saltwater fishing surf, rock, pier, private boat, kayak, party boat and diving as well as fishing on several different continents. United Pier and Shore Anglers of California (UPSAC): Board member 2008-Present; UPSAC Area Coordinator, Los Angeles 2005-2007; Southern California coordinator for the UPSAC Line Recycle Bins Project; organizer of fishing seminars at several piers and the Bolsa Chica State Beach; primary organizer for the Charthouse and Catalina Get Togethers (2008-2009); primary organizer for the UPSAC Booth at the Fred Hall Fishing Show (2008-2010); host of a Coastal Cleanup Day at the Kings Harbor Jetty. mikespence Michael J. Spence, Member – Board of Directors, Central California Regional Coordinator, and Liaison—Boy Scouts of America. Day job as a Design Engineer for a building automation controls contractor and Machinist, Welder, and Fabricator at other times. A fisherman in California for more than forty years including all types of saltwater fishing: surf, rock, pier, private boat, party boat and diving. United Pier and Shore Anglers of California (UPSAC): Board member 2008-Present; UPSAC Area Coordinator, Santa Barbara County 2005-2007. Designer and builder of the bins for UPSAC’s Line Recycle Bins Project. Helps run Kids Fishing derby at local lakes and runs a Boy Scouts fishing program.
